Organization Development

Organization Build

An organization is a dynamic grouping of people working with shared values towards the fulfillment of a common goal that drives business. The correct organizational architecture blended seamlessly into business strategy is an ideal case for the success of profitable ventures. Some of the well-known organizations originated in the 70s and 80s with typical industrial hierarchical models which were suited for those times. Over time, most of the organizations gradually evolved into more responsive models based on priorities and challenges.

Understanding the traditional organization design models; studying their advantages and disadvantages helps one choose the right tools for diagnosis and modifying or overhauling current operating models.

Some of the well-known organizational design models are-

  • McKinsey 7-S Design Model
  • Jay Galbraith’s Star Model
  • Weisbord’s Six Box Model
  • Transformational Model
  • The Congruence Model
  • The Burke-Litwin Organizational Change Model.

Star Model

Models for organization structure, organization design or organization build are abundant. These models are currently based on rigid principles of design and implementation frameworks of global nature. Inherently they allow less flexibility and space for integration of new age concepts like business improvisation or dilemma reconciliation or adversity quotient mapping. This leads to the adaptation of rigid rules common in all organizations.

  • The ‘Star Model’ of Galbraith focuses on processes and people that are a key element of the changing matrix of business sustainability and excellence.
  • In the star model the policies are in sync with each other thereby allowing clear and concise messages to reach the employees.
  • Another advantage of the model is that it drives away individual control of managers which affects operational excellence in the mid and long-term operations and allows them to be driven through design policies.

This model is adapted under many circumstances, especially when process and operational excellence is driven and when the business environment demands efficiency improvement.

While there are numerous ways of studying the model, we have built-in key USPs based on other improved theories and integrated them seamlessly into the model for implementation excellence to gain efficiency at the execution level.

The key USPs of the model are:

  1. Implementation flexibility with a focus on high efficiency
  2. Microsoft Office Easy to use tips and excel based solutions wherein the hard and soft aspects are interwoven
  3. Integration of individual competence mapping and strength evaluation
  4. Efficiency and Effectiveness Improvement of Soft skills through ‘Business Improvisation’ and ‘Dilemma Reconciliation’ Integration

These key USPs have allowed us to enhance and integrate the Star Model in the VUCA world of Indian Businesses today. We realize that the businesses of today need to be aligned to national and international needs at the same time demanding greater flexibility, agility and trust in their people and processes. It also puts tremendous performance pressures and stress on the employees. At this stage it is necessary for organizations to focus on people and processes for de-stressing the employees while flourishing the best performances in individuals and teams. This is why we have focussed on the model wherein people and processes are touched upon while considering the business focus and strategy. This leads to performance change at individual, team, business unit and organizational level.

Business Improvisation

Improvisation may seem to be spontaneous, but managers can foster it in innovation projects through the deliberate development of certain processes and capabilities. Ability to innovate and rapidly respond to changes in the business environment is critical to competitiveness and success. Creativity and problem-solving skills are key elements of improving the outcomes in projects that require innovation. Iterative development, improvisation, and experimentation combined with focus and flexibility are needed to identify new business opportunities and effectively execute projects. Business demands also require efficiency, and many organizations pursue disciplined project management and product development practices that emphasize standardization and consistency to help drive down costs.
